Abstract
We develop a novel series of pre-fluorescent compounds based on pyridinium salts with different hydrophobicity and spectral behavior attached to a nitroxyl moiety.
The activity of these new probes are monitored by fluorescence and/or EPR spectroscopy.
We also investigate the importance of the distribution of the probe and substrate in microheterogeneous media in hydrogen-transfer reactions. We are interested in to study the distribution of these compounds depending on their hydrophobicities, an aspect which has been systematically ignored in previous evaluations of antioxidant activities. By employing a series of nitroxide derivatives and probes of variable hydrophobicities  we will be able to measure these effects in a systematic way. We hope to arrive at a more rigorous model for medium effects on hydrogen-transfer processes.
We also investigate the hydrogen transfer process by directly monitoring nitroxides with phenols with different hydrophobicities by employing electronic spin resonance techniques.
