The research developed in my laboratory includes: i) the search for stress markers and the development of therapies for the control of salmonids; ii) the development of immunological therapies against cancer, through different approaches including transfection with genes of Viral proteins using nanotechnology, topical treatments for the induction of DTH response against tumors, and xenovaccines; iii) the characterization of the cellular and molecular mechanisms associated with the fusion mediated by the activation of the P2X7 receptor; iv) the characterization of the role of the P2X7 receptor in the antigen cross primming and cross dressing.

Abstract:
Our research  aims to understand the mechanisms underlying the formation and repair of myelin, a special membrane present in our nervous system allowing neurons for fast conduction and proper communication. In particular, we are interested in how oligodendrocytes - the myelin-forming cells of the central nervous system-, interact with other glial cells and neurons in the brain in health and disease.

Abstract: Our research is devoted to study the biochemical and biophysical properties of aggregated proteins and peptides and to explore their implications on biology and chemistry. During the last years, we have focused on developing diverse synthetic aggregated peptides that form supra-molecular assemblies called amyloids. In the amyloid state, these peptides can exhibit catalytic properties and hence they behave like enzymes.  Our main current interests are:

  • Develop catalytic amyloids that can have applications in biotechnology as novel bio-nanomaterials
  • Study the emerging catalytic activities of pathological amyloids such as those involved in neurodegenerative diseases (Alzheimer’s, Parkinson´s disease, etc.)
  • Explore the implications of amyloids in Astrobiology, including their potential role in chemical evolution during prebiotic stages
  • Study the folding and misfolding of proteins

Abstrac

I received my Ph.D. in Pharmacology from the University of Chile. During my doctoral fellowship I obtained the L’Oreal-UNESCO for Women in Science Award. I did my postdoctoral training with Dr. Eugenia Morselli at Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. At present, I am Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Chemistry and Biology at Universidad de Santiago de Chile. I study the crosstalk between autophagy and primary cilium in neurons in the context of high-fat diets. I’m focused on determining how the crosstalk between autophagy and primary cilium in hypothalamic neurons regulates the insulinresistance promoted by exposure to saturated fatty acids. Likewise, I’m interested in determining the role of vesicular trafficking impairment and Golgi dysfunction in defects of ciliogenesis in neurons.I’m Principal Investigator of the PCI grant “International Network for the Study of Autophagy (INeStA)” and the FONDECYT “Autophagy and primary cilium crosstalk: a new mechanism in the regulation of insulin sensitivity”.

Abstract

The main focus of research in the laboratory is Extremophiles. This includes sampling from natural extreme environments including Antarctica and other extreme environments in Chile as well as growth and isolation of extremophilic microorganisms, detection, purification and characterization of their enzymes and bioactive compounds for potential industrial applications. Additionally, we are currently investigating the process of biocorrosion, which encompasses synergistically all before mentioned topics with the aim to develop sustainable solutions. My laboratory contributes with all this non-trivial specific knowledge already mentioned and benefis tremendously from the interaction and collaborative scientific work developed in conjunction with institutions in Chile and worldwide. Our applied lines of research allowed us to maintain permanent contact with the chemical, pharma and biotech industry and understand their needs and requirements, assisting them in the development of new sustainable solutions.
